CURRICULUM

The San Fernando Government Secondary School is a seven year, co-educational institution.

The School curriculum includes the traditional CXC '0' level and 'A' level subjects including Woodwork, Food and Nutrition, Information Technology and Technical Drawing. In addition, many co-curricular activities encourage the all round development of the student. Amongst these are sporting and cultural activities including cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, drama, dance, scrabble, chess, Indian Cultural activities, ISCF- Inter-School Christian Fellowship and the Mathematics Olympiad.






CXC(CSEC) subjects

Before final determination of subject choices at the Form 4 level, the Parent, in collaboration with the student, is invited to indicate subject choices that the student would like to pursue at the CXC(CSEC) level.

It is to be noted that

  1. some subject areas are very competitive and so performance will be a very important factor.
  2. students are required to pursue eight subjects.
  3. students will be selected based on performance, availability of space and the advice of teachers.

Subject choices have been adjusted to reflect the following:

  1. Our Form 4 program has three compulsory subjects- English A, English B and Mathematics.
  2. There are four groups from which students can choose and each of these groups has its own compulsory subjects with options also being offered.
  3. All Physics students must also do Add Maths.
  4. All F&N students must do Chemistry and Biology.

Criteria for selection:

  1. Performance at Term Exams. Promotion is also based on a percentage basis - 25% First Term, 25% Second Term and 50% Third Term.
  2. Availability of spaces per subjet (e.g. T.D., I.T. and Art have a maximum of 15 students and the science subjects have a limitaiton 25 students per laboratory).
  3. Conduct is taken into consideration especially in classes where special equipment are used e.g. Science subjects.

Parents must indicate the student's top seven subject choices (not including Eng A, Eng B and Maths) in order of preference.

The options may vary each year due to staffing and curriculum considerations.

NCSE EXAMS

In keeping with the Ministry of Education's thrust to provide Quality Education for all, we have broadened the curriculum to include Music, Technology and Drama. Beginning in 2006 Form 3 Students will sit an exam called NCSE which will provide them with a certificate with which they can obtain Special jobs, with the Qualifications to enter the World of Technology, Arts & Crafts etc. and with which they can access Tertiary Institutions other than the University. Not all students prefer a purely Academic Career and the NCSE provides for these Students.

SUBJECTS OFFERED AT 'A' LEVELS/CAPE.

These include Accounting, Art, Biology, Chemistry, Economics, English, History, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, MOB, SAAM, Sociology and Spanish.

It is to be noted that from the year 2006, CAPE will be in full effect.

Criteria For' A' Level/Cape Admission.

General requirements:

  1. At least 5 passes including Math (grade l OR 2) and English A (grade 1 OR 2) at General Level.
  2. Grades 1 OR 2 in the three subjects to be pursued at A level/CAPE.
  3. Your date of birth must be after 31st Dec 1990

N.B.: Parents also sign a contract - promotion to 6:2 is not automatic. The contents of the contract relate to attendance, discipline and performance.

A-Level registration usually take place one day after the release of O'Level results.

All students must pursue Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies.

The subject group table shows the list of subjects which a student may choose to do together. You are allowed to pick two groups of three subjects.

Only ONE Subject may be chosen from any line.

CO- AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Co- and extra-curricular activities include cricket, football, dance, House System, chess, scrabble, volleyball, drama, Indian Culture, Inter-School Christian Fellowship(ISCF), Mathematics Olympiad.
