History of the School
- 1962 Mod-Sec was officially opened on September 1961 but due to lack of
furniture it never started untl February 19th 1962. School opens with 106
students. It was then named San Fernando Modern Secondary School, hence
the nick-name MOD SEC. The Principal was Mr. Aubrey Garcia. Originally
teachers were contracted from England and Canada. A few of the local
teachers included Mr and Mrs Khan, Mr. Ramsawak and Mrs Maria Davis.
The school was built on a pond which was previously owned by the
sugar-cane estate and was called the Les Efforts pond. It was filled in
the late fifties and the Technical Institute (now called familiarly 'old
Tech') was constructed on it. Later Mod-Sec was also added.

1964 The
Honourable Dr. Eric Williams officially opens the South Block which now
houses classrooms.

1966 On opening the SFGSS school contained only one block plus the Home
Economics centre and the toilet facilities. At that time only Form one
students were
in attendance. In 1966 the school was asked to take care of students from
the Penal Junior Secondary because their school was under construction. As
a result work was begun to add several new building to the school
compound. These includes the library, the Art Room, Staff Room, the
biology Laboratory, the Wood work Centre and the Annex. Incidentally the
Annnex was once a cow shed and a place to stored junk and tools but later
it was converted into a classrooms and an office for the MTS.
Advanced Level classes were introduced. The school became a founding
member of the Secondary Schools Drama Association.

1967
Extra-mural and Extension classes started at the school. They were
terminated in 1980

1967 Mrs.
Ruby Thompson assumed duties as Principal. Mrs Thompson served as
principal for seventeen years and may still be found traipsing the
corridors of ModSec even today. Her period of service includes the years
when the Teachers and students of Mod Sec were actively involved in the
Black Power uprisings of the 1970s. She lead the school through the
consequent crisis and upheaval.

1971 Mr.
Lennox Ramoutar was appointed as the school's first Vice-Principal.
The School's Parent-Teacher Association was established.

1973 The
library and Staff Room Blocks were completed. Also, the Woodwork Centre
was enlarged.

1975 Water
Tanks were installed.

1977 The
music for the School Song was composed by a student Michael Friday.

1980 The
first School magazine "Horizon" was produced.

1984 Mr.
Gibbons Joseph became the third Principal.

1987 The
school celebrated its 25th anniversary.

1989 The
Basketball/Netball court was built.

1990 The
Honourable Clive Pantin, Minister of Education, turned the sod to begin
construction of the Multi-purpose Hall. The dream was to built a structure
which would cater for general assemblies and function and to house a
cafetaria. In this year the PTA drew up the plans to erect the Hall
however the finance was not available to enable completion according to
vision. Nevertheless, the dream still lives on and one day it may be
realised.

1992 The School celebrated its 30th Anniversary.

1994 Mr.
G. Joseph retired in May and Mr. George Ramdial assumed duty as the fourth
Principal in October. He initiated a program to refurbish the plant.
Special attention was paid to the Visitor's waiting area, and the Biology
and Chemistry labs.

The School
wins its first trophy in Football- the South Zone Senior Division Knockout
Trophy.

1995 Mr.
Lennox Khan retired as Vice Principal and Mr. R. Bahadursingh acted as
Vice Principal.

1996 Mr.
Deonarine Ramsumair assumed duty as the fifth Principal. Mrs. Judith
Perreira also assumed duty, as the Vice-Principal.

1997
Paving car park. Re-painting Block C and front of school. Audio-Visual
Room completed and officially opened by the Honourable Dr. Adesh Nanan,
Minister of Education. The library was also made operational with several
librarians from other schools volunteering their services on Saturday to
sort and shelf books.

1998
Refurbishing of Block A and C. Replacing and painting of library roof.
Sewer system connected to WASA.

1999
Cricket nets constructed.
- 2000 Mr.
Ancel Balfour appointed as the third Vice-Principal.

2002 First students from the School to be awarded National scholarships:

Indu Maharaj (also first in the world in 'A' level Geography) and

Rosemarie Ramdeen.
School celebrated its 40th Anniversary.

Mr. Deonarine Ramsumair retires as Principal. Mr. Ancel Balfour acted as
Principal.

2004 Mrs. Janice Clifford appointed to the post of Principal.

2006 May.
Mr. Ancel Balfour transferred out of SFGSS to a school closer to his home in the North.
